Birmingham Hospital Radio has its own diamond jubilee

It has been broadcasting across major hospitals in the city for 60 years now.

They are celebrating with an anniversary ball on May the 19th where past and present members and presenters will be gathering.

The station are also in the difficult process of moving studios- they are about to sign a lease to take over an old Operating Theatre at Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Radio Freeway in South Wales was flooded by chocolate this Easter as members of the public made Easter special for the young patients at Morriston Hospital.

Craig Astley, a DJ on the station, had been hoping for about 60 Easter eggs when he launched the appeal. Instead almost 200 eggs were donated!

The eggs were given to children in Oakwood and Dyfed wards at Morriston Hospital and to the Welsh Dragons Burns Club Easter egg hunt on Pendine sands.

The Hospital Radio Awards 2012….. 24 hours on

This time yesterday on the 31st of March 2012, in a hotel in Northampton, the winners of the Hospital Broadcasting Association Awards 2012 were announced.

From the people or programmes shortlisted in each of the 8 categories, a bronze, silver and gold winner was announced as well the special John Whitney Award and the HBA Volunteer of the Year. Community RA+Edio was keeping a keen eye on the proceedings and talking to some of the evenings attendees so we thought we’d let you know some of our top feedback so far from the evening. The Hospital Broadcasting Association are launching Hospital Broadcasting Week 2012, which will celebrate the good work of Hospital Radio volunteers across the UK.

It will be launched on Saturday March 31st as part of the HBA Conference Weekend in Northampton and it’ll run for nine days, taking in the Easter Weekend, so the “week” won’t officially end until Easter Monday, April the 9th.

Radio 590 Peterborough have taken a theatrical leap.

Patients of Peterbrough City Hospital have been treated to a live performance of Oscar Wilde’s comedy play The Importance of Being Earnest.

The Peterborough Mask Theatre group were on air for two hours to entertain, using household items to create realistic sound effects such as cat litter and sugar cubes. Radio 590 estimate that hundreds of patients tuned in to hear the broadcast. Carolyn English, one of the actors, said “I know if I was lying in bed in hospital that The Importance of Being Earnest is the sort of thing I would want to listen to”.

Radio Enfield appeals for volunteers

Radio Enfield, the hospital radio station for Chase Farm, is seeking volunteers who could spend a couple of hours per week to speak to hospital patients and collect requests.

The station, which began in 1970, runs twenty four hours a day and is looking to fill its interactive request show, which is on air every evening.

The shortlist for the national Hospital Radio Awards has been released.

The 10 awards categories include best male/female presenters as well as station of the year, best special event, and the HBA volunteer of the year.

The awards ceremony will be held on the 31st March 2012 in Northampton as part of their annual conference.
